the little girls

this is a new project i have started doing.
a total new and different style for me.
it's just ink and water on water colour paper.
i have been illustrating these little girls, they have no mouths only big eyes.
and they live in their own little worlds.
they observe and part take, and contribute to their worlds but they can't talk.
this has been a lot of fun so far.
i enjoy the complexity of the drawings, layering the colours and doing something totally different and new.
i really love doing this, i'm already working on some new ones.
i love creating, it is so stimulating and amazing.

stabilo illustration competition

stabilo launched an illustration competition in conjunction with mk bruce lee magazine.
the brief was to do an illustration of your favourite band using only stabilo pens.
i entered a lot of different illustrations.
i decided to try lots of new styles, for example i printed out colours and scanned and printed images and drew on them.
i had a lot of fun doing this project just playing around and trying out new things.
in the end my fokofpolisiekar illustration won 3rd place.
i enjoy these types of projects where i can try new things and explore it's a lot of fun and you learn a lot about yourself.

design indaba super stars entry 2010

this was my entry for the design indaba super stars.
the brief was to express yourself in a unique way.
i decided to build my own world out of words.
it was a fun project.
something totally different for my constructing a 3d little world.
but i enjoyed it a lot.
trying new things is definitely a must as a designer.

christmas cards

these are a few of my christmas card designs that i have done over the years.
i really enjoy doing handmade christmas cards every year.
i feel it's like a personal gift to everyone.
i love doing unique things, and people always love getting them.
because christmas is about giving and sharing.
it's a far great gift to give than to receive.

look into my eyes

i wanted to try something quite different, very minimalistic in it's appearance, but yet very powerful.
i used water colours and inks to create this image.
i decided to just paint 2 sets of my eyes in sunglasses, very clean, but yet so powerful.
for me it feels like the eyes are watching you.
i really enjoyed doing this, and i really loved how it turned out.

bleeding love

i decided to try something different with the ink and water colours.
i only used 3 colours, black, red and wine, and the white of the paper.
it was quite a change from my wide pallet to only these 3 colours.
it was quite an adjustment but in the end it was a lot of fun and i really enjoyed it.
a plain and simple but yet powerful image.

evil clowns

lately i have an obsession with clowns, especially evil clowns.
since for some strange reason most people have a fear of clowns.
i blame the famous stephen king movie IT for this, for who can forget IT lurking in the drain?
forever was that image burned into my brain after watching that movie as a child.
i have really been enjoying doing this series and i love the reactions people have with the clowns.
it's an on going project, one that i find very stimulating and freeing.
i'm mostly doing my clowns in water colours and ink, a medium i think suits them best.

silence is golden

i did this water colour one night, while i was sick at home.
the music was blaring and i looked at pictures of bands.
and i decided to depict this really punk looking band with plasters over their mouths, and i called this silence is golden.
this was my first water colour after a couple of years.
i enjoyed it so much that i have been painting non stop since that night.
i really love the medium and how versatile it is.
each artwork is a surprise on it's own.

shoe t-shirt designs

these designs were submitted for a t-shirt design contest.
the theme was shoes, and not wearing shoes.
these were my designs that i came up with just simple black and white designs on bright t-shirts.
i enjoyed drawing all my designs up by hand, giving them a vintage look and feel.

nampak packaging design award 2009 - you-niverse wine packaging

nampak hosted a packaging design competition in 2009 with the theme of space.
you had to design wine bottle packaging.

my design won the best professional design.

my concept was you-niverse.
the name for my concept is a play on words, i think it works really well.
it was all about you and your wine drinking experience.
it's not just a package it's an experience.
i wanted my packaging to be multifunctional so it doubles up as a lampshade.
the package is dye cut with little holes that correspond with the star signs on the package.
so you and your loved one can enjoy a nice glass of wine under the stars.
it turns any room in your house into your own personal planetarium.
a very unique romantic experience to share with someone special.
i also designed in store posters that go along with the packaging.

i really loved how this project turned out.
it turns any ordinary evening into a beautiful memorable one.
i think design should always have an impact on our lives and it should help us build memories.
design makes my life richer, fuller and more beautiful everyday, and i hope that i do that for someone every day.

yin and yang packaging

we were given a project to design salt and pepper shaker packaging and an ad campaign. i came up with the concept of yin and yang, because salt and pepper is about finding the perfect balance in your food, another part of my concept was the old blue and white china that most of our grand parents and parents have in their home. the beautiful blue and white china comes with a beautiful love story behind the pattern. i decided to incorporate this into my design, because everyone knows the pattern but people have forgotten the story. i designed my packaging to fit together like yin and yang. the two boxes fit together perfectly and work as a unit, although they can each stand on their own. the boxes work together all around from every angle. the pictures line up and continue to form a unit, the one half of the story is printed on the one box and the other half of the story is printed on the other half. the use of old imagery relating to the story was used in the ad campaign. the refil box for the salt and pepper, is a take away box, so it can be discarded after use, plain and simple. everything is very tactile and beautiful. i loved doing this project. it really is one of my favourite projects. i love how the traditions and the modern combined to form something new and beautiful. we can't forget the past, because it's where we come from, it formed us, it's the yin to our yang.

wine label design

i designed these wrap around labels for wine bottles.
the label wrapped around the entire bottle, which gave the bottle's a unique way of displaying them, you could create images and have a very dynamic instore display.

the women on the bottles were hand drawn scanned and then taken to illustrator, coloured and edited to fit on the bottles.

this was a very fun project.
i really enjoy doing packaging and label design.
i love how 3 dimensional it is and how it effects the buyer when choosing a product.
i think the more interactive a product can be with the consumer the better, it just increases your chance of being bought.

water colour girl

i did this drawing one day for fun.
just to experiment and see what the ink and water would do.
i was a lot of fun.
just experimenting seeing what is gonna happen.
it's quite unpredictable but that is why i love wet mediums.

girl inc. underwear design competition

girl inc. and seventeen magazine hosted a competition to design underwear.
i designed 14 different sets of underwear, and paper dolls that went along with the underwear for someone to see how if would fit on a girl.
i had 3 different dolls, a blonde, a brunette and a red head.
i couldn't have naked dolls so i put patterns on the bodies of the dolls, so each doll is unique in her own way, with her own personality.

i designed the dolls with pen and ink, then i added colour with markers and pencil crayons.
layering the colours to create a unique look.
i think the pencil crayons and the markers worked well together.
it really expressed each dolls individual personality.
the underwear was illustrated by hand using a pen, then scanned and coloured in illustrator.
it was a lot of fun using different mediums together, finding out what works for each design.
it was a learning curve for me, and definitely something i want to try again.

i had so much fun doing this competition, i did whatever i wanted to do, there were no limits.
it was such a freeing project and i loved expressing myself.
underwear shouldn't always be a serious thing it can be fun and free too.
i had a lot of different designs, but i loved all of them.
in the end all my hard work paid off because i won the competition.
it was a big honour winning it and making my mark on something that i have never tried before.
i enjoy trying different things and pushing myself.
i learn something new about myself every day.
