we were given the roald dahl story, lamb to the slaughter, we had to design the book and illustrate it.
this is the cover i designed and illustrated for my adult book.
it was a picture book for adults.
full of hidden windows and drawings, which is sort of pop up.
when you open the windows you get to see drawings and all sorts of interesting things.
which emphasizes the hidden agendas and meanings in the story.
the cover was illustrated with pen, ink and spray paint.
i wanted to create a feeling of raw emotion when you see it.
it looks like the person is eating the words.
which is what basically happens in the story when the policemen eat the murder weapon.
i really enjoyed doing this design.
it was a lot of fun experimenting with techniques and layering my drawing to get the right look and feel for it.
because it is a vintage story i wanted to emphasize it with the wall paper pattern in the background.
the whole experience reading the book is very tactile and a sensory experience.
it really engages the reader on all levels.
it's important for a design to be interactive with the viewer.
as you can see with the couple of spreads displayed from the book, i used a textured background and type plays an important role, because type is also used as an illustration.
playing with type is such a wonderful thing and something all designers should embrace more.
it is one of my favourite stories, i would really recommend this story to everyone.
i loved designing the book and and doing all the illustrations.
it's one of my favourite projects.
making type and illustrations work together is always a challenge and doing a whole book is even more challenging.
but it was a lot of fun, something i would definitely like to do in the future.
