i was invited to participate in the 2008 design a bag competition hosted by design indaba.
the theme was green.
this was very appropriate as it was the time when everyone started becoming aware of global warming and that we needed to save the environment.
i did a lot of research for this project.
read up a lot on what was the latest environmentally friendly and green ideas that was around.
we had to do our designs in black and white in a 25 x 25 cm square.
afterwards a pantone swatch was assigned to your design.
these designs were then printed on bags for woolworths.
initially 3 of my designs were chosen, but in the end only 2 were produced.
the bags were handed out at the design indaba conference to the delegates and they were displayed in the woolworths windows.
my design were all very font based, i used the fonts as an illustration tool.
it was very interactive with the viewer, and i think it worked out well.
read between the lines, is a subliminal message for the viewer to encourage them to go green.
it was a lot of fun to figure out how to make it work, but in the end it worked really well, although it is easier to read once it's been printed.
little miss activist was however not produced, but it was a lot of fun doing the design.
plain and simple concept which worked out quite beautifully.
globe words, was designed using all sorts of ways to make your office more environmentally friendly.
they are all listed in the picture, and the words build up our continent africa.
it took a while playing with the words and turning it into africa, but it pulled off in the end.
both my chosen designs were in the top ten and i received another ticket to the conference.
it was yet another wonderful experience and i learnt a lot doing this project.
it was a lot of fun.
i really enjoy competition work, because if gives you a lot of freedom.
