these were my entries for the design indaba 2007 design a bag competition.
i entered a couple of bags and 2 of the designs were chosen for the top 10.
the theme was 10 years of design indaba, but as a designer you had the freedom to do whatever you wanted.
we were given dimensions which we had to design within.
my designs were done entirely in Illustrator, complete digital designs.
the pink bag aka brain bag.
was designed using typefaces, building up a brain with all the different disciplines listed for the design indaba conference.
it was a very fun simple design using only 100% magenta.
it was strong, bold and very striking.
the counting chart bag.
since the theme for that expo was 10 years of design indaba i designed a counting chart from 1 to 10.
for example 1 : one man had a plan
2 : and a couple of ideas
3 : for a 3 day expo and 3 day conference
every number had a certain relevance to the conference.
i thought it worked out really well.
plain and simple design with bold striking colours.
both bags were manufactured and displayed in woolworths windows throughout cape town.
bags were handed out to the delegates at the expo.
it was quite an awesome experience seeing people walk around with my bag.
having a design manufactured was such a wonderful experience it's like seeing your work come to life.
a very memorable experience, and also a first for me as a designer right out of college having two designs in the top 10 and my first big design competition.
i won a ticket to the design indaba conference, which was the best prize i could ever win.
i have been going every year, i would recommend it to every designer, it's food for your design soul.
